The 2007 UCI Social Network Analysis Workshop
This year's UCI Social Network Analysis Workshop will be held at UCI on June 2,
2007. The workshop will be run by Professors Carter Butts and Katie Faust, and
is open to graduate students who would like a short, highly accessible introduction to some of
the basic ideas of network analysis.
Registration
This workshop is open to graduate students in the UCI Sociology and DASA
programs, and to other UCI graduate students at the discretion of the
instructors. Participation is free to qualifying students, but participants must register in
advance by sending email to Carter Butts (buttsc@uci.edu) by 5/31/07. Slots will be allocated on a
first-come, first-served basis.
Time and Place
The workshop will be held from 10:00AM to 3:00PM on 6/2/07 in room SSPB 4206.
Lunch will be provided.
Workshop Materials and Instructions
- Each student must bring a laptop in order to participate; a very small
number of departmental laptops may be available on a first-come, first-serve
basis. (If you will require one, you should specify this in your registration
email.)
- Before the workshop, all students should install Pajek, a simple network
analysis tool. Pajek is available at no cost from http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/pub/networks/pajek/.
The installation file may be found here.
- OSX users will need to employ a Windows emulator to run Pajek;
alternately, it may be easier to borrow a laptop from someone else for
workshop use.
- Linux users can generally install and use Pajek via wine. (The procedure
is very simple -- see http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/pub/networks/pajek/howto/linux.htm
for instructions.)
- Participants should also download and install this data archive prior to the
workshop. This archive contains materials which will be used during the
workshop itself. (Simply unzip the archive into some convenient spot
on your hard drive or USB disk; don't forget to bring it with you!)
