Notes for Tuesday's meeting, as provided by Matthew Mahutga: General Question(s), with sub questions: Questions with an "*" indicate the need for an instrument, where most of the non "*" questions have to do with analysis. 1) What is the overall social structure of a union work site, and how does this relate to the level of democracy? I: Network related questions: *A: Who are the formal and informal leadership? *B: Who are the paid/unpaid union activists in the local? *C: Who do the rank-n-file speak with concerning union issues (or issues of the strike), either to receive or give info, and how much? *D: What is the structure of friendship in the local? E: Are there easily discernable sub-groups that contain formal leadership on the one hand and rank-n-file on the other? F: Who are the "broker" nodes between formal leadership and Rank- n-file? G: How does information flow (both what direction and through what kind of "broker" nodes) between union leadership and rank- n-file. H: How does a friendship network compare to a union information network? II: Non-Network related questions: *A: Are rank-n-file suggestions incorporated into union (strike) policy (or what is peoples perception of this issue?)? *B Are leaders responsive to rank-n-file suggestions (or what is the perception of this)? 2) What is the relationship between network position (broadly defined) and patterns of either strike defection, solidarity, or attitudes toward the union? I: Hypotheses H1: The further a rank-n-file member is from a broker or union leader, the more likely they are to defect. H2: Isolates in either of the above networks are more likely to defect during a strike or be unsupportive of union policies when not on strike. H3: Assuming a norm that supports a strike or union, the higher the density, the lower the level of defection or disension. H4: The more democracy, the less likely there will be defection or disension. II: More network and non-network related questions A: What is the character of picket duties? 1) do people picket with the same or different people every day? *2) Who do people picket with, and how often with each?
